8-Ball Pool is the most widely played billiards discipline worldwide. Understanding the basic rules will help you enjoy the game and improve your skills from the very first match.

Equipment

• 1 pool table (typically 7-foot or 8-foot)
• 15 numbered object balls and 1 cue ball
• 2 pool cues
• 1 triangle rack

Objective of the Game

Pocket all of your assigned balls (solids or stripes) and then legally pocket the 8-ball to win the game.

Rack Setup

1. Arrange the 15 balls in a triangle.
2. The 8-ball must be placed in the center of the rack.
3. One solid ball and one striped ball should be positioned in the two rear corners.
4. The cue ball is placed behind the head string for the break shot.

The Break Shot

• The first player strikes the cue ball to break the rack.
• At least four object balls must contact a cushion, or a ball must be pocketed.
• If a ball is legally pocketed, the player continues their turn.

Assigning Solids and Stripes

• Solids: Balls 1–7
• Stripes: Balls 9–15

Ball groups are usually assigned after the break according to the first legally pocketed ball.

Common Fouls

• Pocketing the cue ball (scratch)
